Standard 1: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:

a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.

c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning,
and creative process.

d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual
environments.

Reflection on the Standard:

When teachers apply their knowledge of subject matter, teaching, and learning, they are able to create meaningful experiences for their students. Such experiences often increase student learning, creativity, and innovation. Additionally, when teachers apply their knowledge of technology in lesson planning, they are able to create many more situations and opportunities that increase student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

Artifact:

To illustrate this standard, I have selected a website that I developed for the Nuhop Center. This website provides resources designed to enhance the experiences that students have at the Nuhop Center. One feature of the website is a blog submission form, where students can answer and submit questions before and after they visit Nuhop. Through these blogging questions, students can prepare for and reflect upon their experiences at the Nuhop Center. Please click on this link to view my webpage.

Explanation of Artifact in Relation to the Standard:

Through the implementation of digital reflective tools like blogging, both students' conceptual understandings and their thinking, planning, and creative processes are enhanced. As students use the blogging feature of my website to reflect on their experiences at Nuhop, they will not only develop a clearer conceptual understanding of the academic content and personal skills that they learned at Nuhop, but they will also develop their thinking, planning, and creative processes. Through designing this website, I have gained valuable technological skills that I plan to use in my future teaching career to enhance students’ experiences with mathematics.
